Mathematical Miscellany #95

A mathematics resources compilation.

Loughborough Department of Mathematics Education

This short video introduces the features of the LUMEN Curriculum. Access the free curriculum resources from Wednesday, 20th March. You can learn more about the Lumen Curriculum which has been designed from these articles on the development of the curriculum; the article collection includes academic papers, shorter articles, and blog posts.

“The resources are informed by the best-available research across mathematics education, cognitive science and educational design.”

In a recent post, I mentioned the mapping documents linking curriculum content to activities on Transum Mathematics including the recently added Functional Skills document.

Reading the March 2024 Transum newsletter, we see that new Functional Skills resources are being added to the site.

As always several new resources have been added; I do like StatGrid Challenge illustrated here. We have lovely gentle start with Level 1….

Transum Mathematics

1st Class Maths – Practice papers 2024 – estimated publication dates.

I keep updating this image on GCSE Revision 2024 because the brilliant 1st Class Maths has now completed the Edexcel and AQA practice papers for Higher and Foundation tiers for Paper 1; the questions are all original and based on high-frequency paper 1 topics.

Maths White Board – Formula sheet familiarisation

Mrs D Maths – Knowledge Organisers

My Knowledge Organisers collection includes a wonderful A Level collection from MrsDMaths; she has now made a start on the Year 1 content with Algebraic Expressions and Quadratics.

This is a great feature on Maths White Board – choose any Model it board and you can see the meanings of terms used; in this example we can look at the meaning of simplify or expression.

For further vocabulary resources, see the post Literacy Skills in Mathematics.

Edexcel – Teacher’s Guide to Command Words

Women in Mathematics

March 8th 2024 is International Women’s Day.
We’ll start with an image from a few years back that have shared before but I think still says it all! Thank you, Steve Lomax – Photo courtesy of the wonderful children of Mansfield Green E-ACT Primary, who shared this wonderful response to the task ‘Describe a mathematician’…

Some useful references on women in Mathematics:

From the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme, Find ways to encourage girls to study Mathematics. Note the free resources here, including (for girls and boys!) Maths, Opening the door to your future, a leaflet which explores the post-16 maths qualifications available to students, to help them decide which one is best.

Note also the 30-minute presentation, Why Study Maths, for students and parents/carers which is about the importance of studying maths post-GCSE. It outlines the options available and provides compelling reasons for choosing to take an advanced maths qualification. Slides and speaker notes are available to download. These resources could be an excellent way of helping Mathematics Departments link curriculum learning to Careers, for all students, helping to meet the Gatsby Benchmark on this.

From Lucy Rycroft-Smith back in 2020, see this wonderful collection of books about Maths by women. Lucy chose 13 books, I like the way she has categorised the books, a book for the artist, for the rebel…. Brilliant.

On the subject of books – I do like Libby Jackson’s “A Galaxy of Her Own” aimed at students in Years 1 to 9, which includes fifty stories of inspirational women in space.

National Careers Week 2024

National Careers Week is a one-week celebration of careers guidance and free resources in education across the UK and runs from 4th – 9th March. Exploring the site you will find free resources including activities, worksheets, and information about the 2024 Virtual Careers Fair which will go live on day 1 of Careers Week. No registration is required, no data is collected from students and there are many opportunities for students to explore.

This provides an ideal opportunity for promoting careers information in schools.

The Careers guidance and access for education and training providers (updated January 2023) document details the Statutory guidance for governing bodies, school leaders and school staff.

The aim is to make sure that all young people in secondary school get a programme of advice and guidance. It is recommended that schools should use the Gatsby Charitable Foundation’s Benchmarks to develop and improve their careers provision.

See the Gatsby site and also the very helpful Gatsby Benchmark Toolkit from The Careers and Enterprise Company, note in particular, benchmark 4,

4. Linking curriculum learning to careersAll teachers should link curriculum learning with careers. For example, STEM subject teachers should highlight the relevance of STEM subjects for a wide range of future career paths.

Pages 23 to 29 of the toolkit for school offers clear guidance on benchmark 4.

Further resources:

We are fortunate in Mathematics to have the wonderful Maths Careers site with its extensive collection of resources for students from ages 11 to adult. Three sections by age on careers are available: 11-16, 16-19, and 19+.

Read – The Gatsby Career Benchmarks – A Maths Perspective.

From amsp, Where maths meets the world of work. The AMSP is working on videos, which showcase the maths in different careers; each video is paired with a resource for the classroom or for use online, so students can get a real taste of what the job may entail. Looking at the first video ‘Try being a Data Detective’ there are versions of each resource available for students of different ages. Desmos Classroom activities are available for each version.

Plus Magazine has a whole series of Career interview articles.

Check the BBC Bitesize Careers page, the information available here includes Where could your favourite subject take you? Check out the Jobs that use Maths.

With UCAS you can explore jobs in a variety of ways, by job family, by subject or by skill; look at Science, Engineering and Mathematics for example.

Good Career Guidance: Reaching the Gatsby Benchmarks,

From amsp, see Supporting your students’ transition to Advanced Maths, their Maths: Opening the door to your future leaflet explores the post-16 maths qualifications available to students, to help them decide which one is best. Note also the 30-minute presentation, Why study maths for students and parents/ carers which is about the importance of studying maths post-GCSE. It outlines the options available and provides compelling reasons for choosing to take an advanced maths qualification. Slides and speaker notes are available to download.

A wealth of free resources are available on Integral, see The FMSP Legacy Resources Archive. Access is free via Guest Access.

Forum Case Studies, FORUM has published many case studies about employer-linked curriculum projects.

Neon, a partner of Tomorrow’s Engineers, an organisation I have mentioned previously as part of my Posters collection has a variety of career resources.

Mathematical Miscellany #94

A mathematics resources compilation.

The GCSE Revision 24 collection has been updated. 1st Class Maths is excellent for providing practice papers; Edexcel Practice Paper 1 is now available for Foundation as well as Higher. The questions are all original and based on high-frequency paper 1 topics.

1st Class Maths – Practice papers 2024 – estimated publication dates.

I like the mapping documents linking curriculum content to activities on Transum; recently added we have Functional Skills.

Backwards faded combining ratios – Dave Taylor

Dave Taylor has been adding to his excellent Backwards Faded Maths resources. Recent additions include Reverse Percentage Decrease, Combining Average Speeds, Forming Equations and Ratio, Electricity Readings, Ratio, Fractions and Percentages, and Angles in Polygons.

The Backwards Faded section of Dave Taylor’s website includes an introduction, to quote from the introduction –

‘In backward faded worked examples, students are required to try to find a solution in the last step on problem 1, the last two steps on problem 2, and so on. In other words, students are required to continue the steps given to solve the problem.’

Dave Taylor – Backward Faded Maths

Try this useful resource for plotting linear and non-linear graphs from Andy Lutwyche. The resource was designed to revise plotting linear graphs from an equation before moving on to non-linear graphs (quadratic, cubic, reciprocal and exponential). It’s great to have the grids provided (and answers).
